What to pack inside your birth bag

This hospital bag checklist infographic was created to give you a quick snapshot of what to pack inside your maternity bag. As a midwife we often get asked “What shall I include in my hospital bag?”. Most women get discharged within 24 hours so do not need the big suitcases that we see numerous times. Generally an overnight bag will do.

Hospital Bag Checklist

For Mum:

• x1 Nursing Pyjamas.
• Wash bag.
• Body wash
• Body lotion
• Grey Flannel.
• x6 Maternity pads.
• x6 Disposable Knickers.
• Toothbrush.
• Mini Toothpaste.
• Mini roll on.
• Open Toe Slippers (to allow your feet to breathe and recover from swelling caused by pregnancy).
• Clothes to wear home.

For Baby:

• x3 100% cotton sleepsuits (foldable mittens built in to stop baby scratching their delicate skin).
• x3 100% cotton short sleeve body suits.
• x2 100% cotton hats.
• x1 100% cotton pramsuit (so you can even take your baby home assured that they are in warm outdoor wear).
• x6 nappies.
• x1 pack of baby wipes.

If you know you’ll be having a caesarean section or you are being induced (or have any other reasons to be in hospital) over 24 hours? You will need more than the above list.

There is also no need to bring your baby’s car seat in until you are being discharged. Most delivery rooms have very limited space.
